Launched at Gamescom – and with a premiere to boot
As a DJ, I had the privilege of accompanying a very special event at this year's Gamescom: the 10th anniversary of Heroic Labs. The celebration did not take place in the exhibition halls, but high above Cologne – on the rooftop terrace of KölnSKY. For me personally, this was a first, because although I have often DJed on the 27th and 28th floors, it was my first open-air set above the rooftops of the city. And that in the middle of August in absolutely perfect summer conditions.
Gamescom: The world's largest gaming trade fair
Gamescom is an international trade fair highlight, attracting huge crowds of gaming fans, studios, developers and industry professionals from all over the world to Cologne every year. With its enormous visitor numbers, international publishers and lively mix of entertainment and business, Gamescom is one of the most important meeting places for the global gaming and tech scene.
For Heroic Labs, whose technologies are used in numerous games and apps worldwide, Gamescom is one of the key venues for direct exchange with partners, studios and customers. And it was precisely this international community that shaped the Heroic Labs anniversary event at KölnSKY.
DJ at the rooftop party in Cologne: summer, sundowners and international guests
The mix of guests from many different countries, great vibes and warm August weather set the tone for my DJ set right from the start. With a view over the whole of Cologne, delicious drinks and sunset vibes, it was clear that the evening needed groovy, relaxed sounds.
That's exactly what defined my DJ set that evening, with a dash of Afrobeats, a few reggae sounds, vocal house and a clear reference to the sundowner atmosphere. Perfect for getting the guests in the mood without drowning out their conversations.
International trade fair visitors: a very special audience
Events in the context of major international trade fairs such as the Gamescom always bring together a special mix of people. Professionals, developers, creatives, and decision-makers from the most diverse countries meet – and it's precisely this diversity that should be reflected in the music. For me as an event DJ, this means preparing well for the event and the guests through an initial consultation with the client and bringing together different musical preferences. When guests from completely different cultural backgrounds feel engaged at the same time, then as a DJ, I've done everything right.
My DJ set at Gamescom: hip-hop beats for the late evening
As the evening progressed, the atmosphere became more dynamic. Musically, I broadened my repertoire – partly because the predominantly male crowd quickly signalled that they were also up for some heavy hip-hop beats, which of course made me happy. It's precisely this mixture of a relaxed start and a cheerful finish, while finding out what the crowd wants to hear today as the evening progresses, that makes evenings like this so exciting for me as a DJ.
An anniversary party at KölnSKY full of wonderful coincidences
A little highlight on the side: although it was purely a business event, I saw three familiar faces from past wedding gigs – magician Timo Brecht and photographer Alina Cürten with her husband, who was there as a videographer. An unexpected but lovely surprise!
An all-round successful anniversary event above the rooftops of Cologne
The anniversary event hosted by Heroic Labs as part of Gamescom was a real summer highlight. International guests, perfect summer vibes, a rooftop location with views across Cologne – and the musical freedom to play a set that evolved from sundowners to hip-hop beats.
An evening that shows just how versatile a DJ gig at Gamescom can be. And as always, the photos really tell the story of how special this rooftop gig was.
